learning through play
Kids’ Canvas is a preschool in Bushwick, Brooklyn designed to indulge children’s need to play, foster creativity and to give a green light to fun for kids. We provide a social environment where children build relationships with other children, as well as with the material world around them. The teacher’s place alongside the child is to guide and encourage exploration through a variety of media, including art, music, theater, movement and nature discovery.
exploring the outdoors
Outdoor exploration is encouraged every day that the weather allows. In addition to play at Maria Hernandez Park, Kids’ Canvas has access to a community garden to use as an outdoor classroom. We use gardening tools in conjunction with sticks and stones to explore a natural setting: digging for worms, bugs and ants; watching for birds and butterflies. Every day children set aside their fruit and veggie scraps from lunch and snack and bring the “worm food” to the garden to create compost.
Projects and ideas are child-led and exploratory. Materials are open-ended and allow children to be creative with them, stimulating the imagination. Natural materials such as clay, wooden blocks and play fabric are often used.
Kids’ Canvas provides a blank canvas for children to freely create while learning and playing.
